Programs
Portraits of Purpose: F4F
Girls as young as twelve are introduced to the importance of having a healthy self-image by engaging in a be (you)tiful two part photo shoot : 1) I am imperfect 2) yet, I am be (you)tiful.
Portraits of Purpose is a program that provides girls with the knowledge and self-confidence they need to embrace their individuality and understand that true beauty originates from an acceptance of self. Participation in this program will afford young women the opportunity to understand and truly become self-aware in order to understand that beauty truly is more than outward appearance, and that it is a patchwork of intrinsic traits, life experiences, and self confidence. Young women learn how to embrace their shortcomings and use them to propel them to their dreams and avoid feeling self-conscious about their outward appearances. Equally important, the program provides girls the opportunity to discuss their own perceptions of beauty based on the information they receive from the media, local communities, and their environments.
Perceived negative self-images plague young women today throughout our communities and across the globe. Statistics show that the vast majority of girls growing up today have a negative self-image. Most will attempt to overcome these negative self-images and obtain the acceptance of others by engaging in increasingly risky activities including sex, violence, and substance abuse. In most instances, low self-esteem is the catalyst for engaging in such activities.
This program serves young women who are in need of positive self-images. The majority of this program’s participants are likely to come from disadvantaged families with low incomes.
The ability to develop and maintain positive self-images is a necessity for today’s young women. Once they become confident and secure in their own skin, they are be better equipped to become strong and contributing members of society. Regardless of size, shape, color, or ethnicity, every young woman is a unique reflection of beauty.
